ISLAMABAD, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani Monday strongly condemned a suicide attack on a police station in the northwest, which killed at least 19 people and injured over 40 others, the PM office said.
A suicide bomber rammed his explosives-packed vehicle into the building of a police station in the city of Lakki Marwat, a main city in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
The bomber hit the police station at 7 a.m. local time, when most of the policemen were asleep, a police officer said.
The attack also injured over 40 people, mostly policemen, he said. Several injured are registered as in critical condition, hospital sources said.
The Prime Minister ordered the concerned authorities for holding an immediate inquiry into the incident and to provide best medical facilities to the injured, a statement from the PM office said. He conveyed condolences to the bereaved families, it said.
Local people took part in relief activities and shifted the injured to hospitals in private vehicles.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack. The officials blamed Taliban militants for the attack.
Lakki Marwat has seen deadliest attacks in the past, targeting pro-government villagers and policemen.
