Typhoon Malou approaches South Korea

09-06-2010 15:54 BJT

SEOUL, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Another typhoon is approaching the Korean Peninsula less than a week after the season's seventh typhoon Kompasu struk the west coast of South Korea.

As of 11:00 a.m. Monday, Typhoon Malou was heading north toward Jeju Island from waters about 190 kilometers southwest of the island, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). It was moving at a speed of eight kilometers per hour.

The typhoon is weak and small in scale with central pressure of 994 hectopascals, but could grow in power as it moves closer to the peninsula, the KMA said.

Malou, a Mandarin meaning "agate" in English, is expected to reach some 40 km southwest of Seoguipo, a town on Jeju Island, around 9:00 p.m. Monday and to hit the mainland by Tuesday.

Though relatively weak in scale, the typhoon's slow speed raises concerns over the possible damages from strong winds and heavy rain it will accompany, while passing through South Korea.

Five people were killed when Typhoon Kompasu hit South Korea Thursday, paralyzing subway service, causing massive power outages and prompting flight cancellations.

Anti-submarine drills South Korea and the United States planned to stage off the Korean peninsula's west coast have been postponed due do the approaching typhoon, Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said Saturday.
