Australian Labor Party wins enough seats to form new gov't

09-07-2010 14:03 BJT

CANBERRA, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Seventeen days after the inconclusive Australian general election, Labor Party on Tuesday gained enough seats to form government.

The two country independent Members of Parliament (MPs) - Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott - made the decision at Parliament House in Canberra on Tuesday afternoon to support Labor Party to form government.

Windsor in the media conference said National Broadband Network and climate action were the prime reason for his support to Labor, while Oakeshott regarded stability in Parliament and interests of regional Australia as the focuses on his decision.

North Queensland independent MP Bob Katter earlier on Tuesday split with the two other regional independents, confirming his support to Coalition.

Labor Party now holds 76 seats, including elected Greens' MP Adam Bandt and independent MP Andrew Wilkie last week signed agreement to support the party, while Coalition has 74 seats.

This means ruling Labor leader Julia Gillard would be able to go to Governor-General Quentin Bryce, and be sworn in as prime minister to survive a no-confidence motion on the floor of Parliament over the next three years.

However, Parliament will not resume until the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) officially finalizes the election count, and returns the writs.

In Australia's 2007 election, it took the AEC 27 days to return the writs.
