Israel transfers construction materials to Gaza

09-14-2010 08:19 BJT

JERUSALEM, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli army on Monday allowed construction materials into Gaza, meant for upgrading a sewage treatment plant.

Trucks delivered some 250 tons of pipes and iron to a facility currently under construction in central Gaza's Sheikh Ajlin neighborhood, a Defense Ministry press release sent to Xinhua said.

The German government and other international groups financed the project, which Israel approved in May. The facilities are meant to "significantly improve the treatment of sewage in the Gaza Strip and drastically reduce harm to the environment and sources of water in the area," the press release said.

Last week, more than 80 tons of iron were transferred to a similar facility in northern Gaza Strip, sponsored by the World Bank.

Israel eased its siege on the Palestinian enclave in June, following high international pressure after Israeli navy intercepted an international Gaza aid flotilla, killing nine activists on board.

The delivery of the building materials for the sewage treatment plant was announced one day before the scheduled fresh round of direct peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh on Tuesday.
