Schwarzenegger welcomes APEC to hold senior meetings in San Francisco

09-14-2010 14:09 BJT

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said on Monday that he welcomed the decision to hold a series of senior Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum meetings in San Franscisco in 2011.

"California jobs, business vitality, and our cultural identity all are deeply tied to the Asia-Pacific region. It will not be long before our economic relationship surpasses 400 billion dollars," the governor said in a statement.

Schwarzenegger issued the statement following the announcement by the U.S. State Department that it has chosen San Francisco to host senior APEC forum meetings.

In preparation for a November 2011 heads-of-state meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 2011, APEC's 3rd Senior Officials' Meeting and a host of related meetings will be held in San Francisco in September 2011.

Envisioned for San Francisco is an intensive series of meetings, including the Senior Officials' Meeting, working group and committee meetings, public-private forums involving senior government and private sector leaders, and a high-level meeting of energy and transportation officials, Schwarzenegger said.

Issues addressed at these meetings will include those related to APEC's core mission to promote free and open trade and investment and strengthen economic integration in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as making regional economic growth more inclusive and sustainable.

APEC is the first high-level international government meeting for either San Francisco or California to bid on and win in over a decade.

APEC is a 21-member association of economies from the Asia-Pacific region working together to advance regional economic integration and prosperity. APEC meetings held each year range from technical working groups to the annual gathering of APEC Leaders. Senior officials are ambassador-level negotiators for each of the 21 economies.
