U.S. offers 261-million-dollar aid to flooded Pakistan

WASHINGTON, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. government is now providing 261 million U.S. dollars in assistance to flood-ravaged Pakistan, the U.S. State Department said on Monday.

It includes approximately 211 million dollars for the immediate relief efforts in Pakistan, and an additional 50 million dollars for the initial recovery efforts in helping rebuild communities affected by the floods, the department said in a statement.

The aid does not include any in-kind and technical assistance, it added.

"The U.S. also has provided civilian and military in-kind assistance in the form of halal meals, pre-fabricated steel bridges and other infrastructure support, as well as air support to and within Pakistan to transport goods and rescue people at an approximate value of 40 million dollars," the department said.

"To date, these aircraft have evacuated more than 13,000 people and delivered 5.4 million pounds of relief supplies," it said.

"We are also expanding pre-existing programs in flood-affected areas," the statement added, saying U.S. businesses and private citizens are also making contributions to assisting the people in Pakistan.

According to the department, 18 U.S. military helicopters are currently operating out of Ghazi Airbase in northern Pakistan, 8 operating out of Pano Aqil Airbase in southern Pakistan, and 4 at Chaklala Airbase near Islamabad being prepared for future missions.

Meanwhile, the U.S. military C-130 and C-17 cargo aircraft are continuing to provide airlift support to Pakistan, delivering relief supplies to regions across the country.
