French president says road to achieving MDGs is "still immense"

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday said despite progress made in achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), "the road ahead is still immense."

The statement came as Sarkozy addressed a high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly reviewing the status of the eight anti- poverty targets, which the world leaders vowed to meet by 2015.

Sarkozy highlighted that in the wake of the global economic and financial crises, progress has stalled in meeting the development goals, particularly in Africa.

"The crisis is severe in rich countries, it creates the deficit but the crisis is much worse for poor countries. We have no right to do less. And the decision we make, we hope that all developed countries agree to do more and do it naturally as a priority for Africa," he said.

Established by the UN Millennium Declaration in 2000, the MDGs include time-bound targets for reducing extreme poverty and child mortality rates, fighting disease epidemics and for promoting gender equality, education and environmental sustainability by the year 2015.

With only five years left to reach the target date, Sarkozy called on world leaders to meet their commitments and accelerate efforts.

Sarkozy expressed his conviction "that while all developed countries are in deficit, they must find new sources of funding for the fight against poverty, for education and for solving major health problems in Africa."
