09-21-2010 08:53 BJT

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday met with French President Nicolas Sarkozy to discuss the issues of global economic governance and the Middle East peace, a UN readout said.

"The secretary-general and President Sarkozy discussed the Millennium Development Goals Summit as well as the role of the United Nations in global governance, underlining that this year's General Assembly will particularly focus on this issue," the readout said. "They exchanged views on the need to address longstanding issues of global economic governance, and on the forthcoming G20 meetings."

The two met on the sidelines of the three-day high-level meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which opened here Monday. The MDGs are a set of eight international development goals designed to reduce poverty and improve the lives of people in less developed countries. The goals were first set at the Millennium Summit in 2000, and are due to be achieved by 2015.

"They also discussed the launch of the direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians as well as the window of opportunity now opening in regard to the situation in Cote de ' Ivoire," the readout said.

The United States relaunched the direct peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians in a bid to solve all the outstanding issues within a year. The United Nations is part of the diplomatic group, known as the Quartet, to seek a two-state solution, which means a secure Israel to live in peace with an independent Palestinian State.

"The secretary-general thanked France for its continued support for United Nations peacekeeping activities, particularly in Lebanon," the readout added.
