Chinese troops pay attention to coordination with friendly forces -- commander

MATYBULAK RANGE, Kazakhstan, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- The commander of the Chinese contingent in the "Peace Mission 2010" anti-terror exercise in southern Kazakhstan said Sunday the Chinese troops were attaching importance to strengthening coordination with their counterparts from other members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Through close coordination with friendly troops, the Chinese troops had successfully conducted joint battle command training and combat drills, laying a good foundation for the formal start of the war games, said Lt. General Li Shaojun, commander of the 1,000-strong Chinese troops and also vice commander of the Chinese People's Liberation Army's Beijing Military Area Command.

Before they left China for the war games, the Chinese troops had conducted theoretical and basic training and combined combat drills, Li said, adding that they also carefully studied subjects related to joint anti-terror operations.

When the Chinese troops arrived in Matybulak Range, south Kazakhstan, Chinese commanders worked closely with their counterparts and reached consensus on the purpose, plan of action and combat coordination of the exercise, said the Chinese general.

Compared with previous "Peace Mission" exercises, this year's exercise has a lot of differences in terms of the troop size, weaponry and command methods, Li said. In addition, different local conditions and terrain, as well as language barriers have all added to the difficulty of maintaining good coordination between participating forces, he added.

China sent an assortment of military hardware to the war games, including H-6 bombers, J-10 fighters, early warning aircraft, aerial tankers and T-99 army tanks -- all were demonstrated in China's 60th anniversary National Day parade, he said.

"As the formal start of the exercise is approaching, we must strive to do good work in conducting drills and combat coordination in each phase of the exercise," he said.

"Peace Mission 2010," the seventh joint military exercise of its kind within the framework of the SCO, involves 5,000 troops from five of the six SCO member states -- China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan -- from Sept. 9 to 25. Uzbekistan is not taking part.
