BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday expressed its affirmation on a Philippines inquiry report on a hostage-taking incident last month, but said the report needs to be further studied.

Philippine Acting Foreign Affairs Secretary Esteban Conejos Jr. handed over to Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Liu Jianchao a copy of the report on Monday morning, almost one month after the hostage crisis in Manila, in which eight tourists from Hong Kong were killed.

"The long report needs time to be studied earnestly. At this stage the report shows that the Philippine side takes the issue seriously and sincerely, and the Chinese side gives affirmation in this regard," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu at a regular press conference.

Jiang said the report has also been handed over to the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Jiang hoped that the Philippines could properly deal with follow-up affairs and take effective measures to protect the Chinese nationals in the Philippines to avoid tragedy of such kind.

"China will work with the Philippine side to push forward bilateral ties in a healthy and stable manner," Jiang said.

The Philippine investigation committee has recommended sanction against senior local and police officials found liable for the mishandling of the Aug. 23 hostage crisis, President Benigno Aquino III said Monday.
