Arms supply ban to Iran not unilateral sanction: Russian FM

09-26-2010 07:31 BJT

MOSCOW, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Russia's refusal to deliver military equipment, including S-300 missile systems, to Iran should not be considered a sanction, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Saturday.

Russia, Lavrov said, remains opposed to any unilateral sanctions against Tehran.

Russia was merely following the United Nations Security Council's resolution when it declined to ship military equipment to Iran, Lavrov said.

"We simply documented in the presidential decree what is required from Russia and all of the other states in relation to Iran after the adoption of this new resolution," Lavrov told Rossiya 1 television.

President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree Wednesday, officially prohibiting the shipment of S-300 air defense missile systems, armored vehicles, warplanes and helicopters and warships to Iran in line with U.N. Security Council resolution No.1929.

The minister also said that additional measures regarding the Iran nuclear issue were discussed at this week's ministerial meeting of the six-nation group (the U.N. Security Council's five permanent members plus Germany) in New York.
