China not affected by recalls of Similac infant formulas: Abbott Nutrition

09-26-2010 10:50 BJT

CHICAGO, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Abbott Nutrition on Thursday said that no products distributed in China are affected by the recent recall of some of its Similac-brand infant formulas.

"Consumers in China should be assured that no products distributed locally by Abbott Nutrition are affected by the recent proactive, voluntary recall of some Abbott Nutrition products in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and some countries in the Caribbean," Abbott Nutrition's divisional vice president of Global Public Affairs told Xinhua.

"Abbott is recalling these products following an internal quality review that detected the remote possibility of the presence of a small, common beetle in the product produced in one production area in a single manufacturing facility in the United States."

"The matter poses no serious health concerns to infants or toddlers.

If ingested, however, there is a low probability that it could cause diarrhea and/or nausea. "Smoter said.

Abbott Labs announced a voluntary recall on Wednesday of about 5 million units of its top-selling Similac-brand powdered infant formula after beetles were found in the products and in a Michigan plant where they are made.

Asked why Abbot initiated the recall, Smoter said "Abbott understands that parents expect to feed their children only the highest quality products. The company therefore initiated this proactive, voluntary recall, so that parents know the infant formula products Abbott provides unquestionably meet the highest quality standards for which we are known."

Recalled products include certain lots of Similac Advance LCP with iron powder, Go and Grow milk powder and Isomil Advance Powder. No Abbott liquid infant formulas are affected.

The company is implementing a plan to address this matter in the affected manufacturing facility, which is expected to be completed shortly. No other facilities or products are involved in this recall. Abbott has consulted with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding the recall.

Abbott is a global, broad-based health care company devoted to the discovery, development, manufacture and marketing of pharmaceuticals and medical products, including nutritionals, devices and diagnostics. The company employs nearly 90,000 people and markets its products in more than 130 countries.
