Central China's GDP skyrockets in first half of 2010

09-26-2010 16:32 BJT

Six provinces in central China have maintained great momentum for economic growth since last year. Their total GDP for the first half of 2010 reached nearly 4 trillion yuan, up 15 percent from a year earlier, and the growth rate witnessed an increase of 6.2 percentage points from last year.

The Central Economic Region, which consists of the six provinces, enjoyed a higher GDP growth rate than the eastern, western and northeastern economic regions, Li Pumin, deputy secretary-general of the National Development and Reform Commission, said at a meeting in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province on Sept. 25.

Li said that the central region's GDP reached 7 trillion yuan in 2009, and its proportion of China's total GDP rose from 18.8 percent in 2005 to 19.4 percent last year. Meanwhile, the region's GDP per capita reached 20,000 yuan, two times that of 2005.

The State Council promulgated the "Opinions on Promoting the Rise of the Central Economic Region" in April 2006. After that, with strong support from related departments of the State Council, the six provinces have conscientiously implemented the development strategies formulated by the central government, clearly achieved faster and greater progress in economic development than before and taken an increasingly important position in China's economy.
