6.5-magnitude earthquake rocks eastern Indonesia, no casualties

JAKARTA, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck off eastern parts of Indonesia on Sunday, there was no potential of tsunami and damage or casualties, Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency reported.

The quake jolted at 19:12 a.m. Jakarta time (1712 GMT) with the epicenter at 138 km northeast Tual of Maluku province and at a depth of 59 km under sea bed, an official of the agency Beni Hendrawanto told Xinhua.

The intensity of the quake was felt at 2 to 3 MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity) at Kaimana town, he said.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported on its website that the quake was measured at 6.0 on the Richter scale with a depth of 8.7 km under sea bed.

National Disaster Management Agency official Gabriel Sigit confirmed to Xinhua that there was no report of building damaged or people injured.

Indonesia sits on a vulnerable quake-hit zone so called the " Pacific Ring of Fire."
