Senior Fatah official denies PNA's talks with Israel as negotiations

09-29-2010 08:03 BJT

DAMASCUS, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinians Fatah movement official said Tuesday what happened in Washington and Egypt between the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) and Israel is not negotiation but preliminary meetings over negotiations.

Azzam al-Ahamad, the central committee member of Fatah movement, affirmed to Xinhua in an interview that all meetings between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were "to prepare for the talks," but have failed to bear fruit.

PNA has reiterated that Israel has to stop Jewish settlement building on Palestinian territories before resuming talks.

Peace talks between PNA and Israel were suspended in December 2008 in the light of the Israeli assault on Gaza Strip. The two sides, however, decided to resume talks on an invitation by Washington earlier this month.

The Fatah's central committee member arrived in Damascus on Thursday to hold talks with Damascus-based Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal over inter-Palestinian reconciliation. The two rival factions agreed on Friday to put an end to the sour dispute between them.
