Liu Peng, Minister of the General Administration of Sport of China and President of the Chinese Olympic Committee and of Guangzhou Asian Games organisers GAGOC, said it was a pleasure to welcome the guests and representatives of previous Asian Games host cities to the Chinese capital in the best season of the year. Indeed, a bright blue sky and warm autumnal sunshine had greeted the guests earlier in the day, and the evening brought a sliver of moon and clear night sky over Beijing's illuminated, historical treasures.

Liu explained that the torch relay for the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou next month would begin in Beijing on Tuesday and continue through Harbin, Chanchung and Haiyang before touring the 21 cities of Guangdong Province leading up to the Opening Ceremony on November 12. The other Chinese cities have either staged an OCA event or will stage one in the near future.

"Today there is 31 days to go before the opening of the 16th Asian Games, and tomorrow (Tuesday) the Asian Games torch will be lit at the Temple of Heaven - a symbolism of the wisdom of the Chinese people," he said.

Liu said the ceremony indicated that preparations were in the final stage, and spoke of the "enthusiasm" and "solidarity" of the Chinese people in making the 16th Asian Games a success.

"The Guangzhou Asian Games is sure to be a sports gala offering peace, friendship and tranquility across Asia," he concluded. Liu was speaking at the official banquet in the Beijing Hotel.
