DAR ES SALAAM, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- "It's a pleasure to exchange medical experiences with the Chinese navy doctors. This is the first time for me to work on a navy hospital ship with modern medical treatment facilities. We need to work together with the Chinese navy doctors on common diseases as the two countries have many medical exchange programs," Tanzanian Brigadier General Ally Sinda told Xinhua here aboard the visiting Chinese navy hospital ship Peace Ark on Wednesday.

Starting from 8 a.m. local time (0500 GMT), Sinda had been working with the Chinese navy doctors on Tanzanian patients with eye diseases. He termed Peace Ark's visit to Tanzania as a good opportunity for Tanzanian military doctors to make medical exchanges with the Chinese navy doctors.

For the 52-year-old Sefu Said Mtimbika, who works as a driver at the Tanzanian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, this was the first time for him to receive a comprehensive medial check-up although he has developed some symptoms of high pressure and heart disease.

"I'm highly impressed upon the medical services of the Chinese navy doctors and the medical equipment on the ship. Now I have got a full knowledge of my health problems and will visit the local hospitals for further treatment," Mtimbika told Xinhua after finishing his medical check-up on board Peace Ark.

Local women and children, as well as Tanzanian government workers queued on Peace Ark to receive medical check-up, while a staff from the Tanzanian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare told Xinhua that many Tanzanians would not like to make the comprehensive medical examination as it costs a lot in the east African country.

Earlier at the joint press conference held on Peace Ark on Tuesday, Major General Salim Salim, head of Lugalo General Military Hospital in Dar es Salaam, said that Peace Ark's visit to Dar es Salaam is of great significance for providing an opportunity for the Tanzanian military doctors who have no chance to go to China to make exchanges with Chinese doctors.

He expected that there will be more and more Tanzanian military doctors who might go to China personally to get medical training in the future through Peace Ark's visit here.

For his part, Major General Bao Yuping, commander of the Peace Ark, said that the Chinese navy hospital ship's "Mission Harmony 2010" is a trip of service, a trip of harmony and a trip of friendship to reflect the theory of harmonious world and harmonious sea.

Peace Ark on Tuesday arrived in Dar es Salaam with the aim to deepen the traditional friendship of China and Tanzania, strengthen the bilateral military cooperation, benefit the local people and increase the people to people exchanges as well.

The maiden voyage of the new hospital ship to provide humanitarian medical service overseas is an important practice for the Chinese naval force to actively take multiple military missions in peace time as well as a key measure to gain experience in carrying out multiple healthcare services at sea.

During its five-day stay at Dar es Salaam port, the medical doctors aboard the ship are scheduled to diagnose and treat local citizens and students. When necessary, patients will be transferred in batches to the main platform of the ship for further treatment and operations.

Before Dar es Salaam, Peace Ark visited Djibouti and Mombasa, Kenya, and will visit Seychelles and Bangladesh after.

As the first hospital ship in the world with a 10,000-ton capacity, Peace Ark set sail from Zhejiang province in east China on Aug. 31. The navy hospital ship has 428 soldiers, officers and medical workers aboard.
