Four infant deaths prompt recall of strollers in U.S.

10-21-2010 10:19 BJT

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on Wednesday that about two million strollers are being recalled across the country due to entrapment and strangulation hazards.

The agency said it has received four reports of stroller-related infant deaths between 2003 and 2005, along with five reports of entrapment in the strollers, resulting in cuts and bruises.

"Entrapment and strangulation can occur, especially to infants younger than 12 months of age, when a child is not harnessed," the agency said in a statement.

"An infant can pass through the opening between the stroller tray and seat bottom, but his/her head and neck can become entrapped by the tray. Infants who become entrapped at the neck are at risk of strangulation."

The recall includes Quattro Tour strollers and travel systems made before November 2006 and MetroLite stroller and travel systems made before July 2007.

The strollers were made by Graco Children's Products Inc., of Atlanta, Georgia.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled strollers and contact Graco for a free repair kit, Graco said.

Consumers can continue use of the stroller as a "travel system," Graco said, adding that when the stroller is used with the infant car seat, the entrapment and strangulation hazards posed by the space gap are not present.
