Preparation completed for 17th ASEAN Summit, related meetings: Vietnam

HANOI, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Dao Viet Trung said here Wednesday that all the preparations including documents, protocol and security have been completed for the upcoming 17th ASEAN Summit and related meetings.

"Vietnam vows to ensure the highest level of security for the delegates," said Trung at a press conference.

The 17th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and related summits among ASEAN and dialogue partners will be held in Vietnamese capital city of Hanoi from Oct. 28 to 30.

The 17th ASEAN summit will draw leaders from ten ASEAN members including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam.

Following that, ASEAN leaders will hold annual ASEAN Plus One Summits with China, Japan, the Republic of Korea and India respectively. Besides, ASEAN this year will also hold summits with Russia, Australia, New Zealand and the United Nations respectively said Trung.

The ASEAN Plus Three Summit will draw leaders of ASEAN countries and China, Japan and the Republic of Korea.

The East Asia Summit (EAS), or the so-called ASEAN Plus Six, will be held amongst the leaders from the ASEAN member countries and the leaders of six ASEAN dialogue partners, namely China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand.

The EAS meeting this year invited foreign chiefs of the Untied States and Russia as guests, said Trung. EAS will be enlarged and added with two new members of the United States and Russia next year.

With the theme of "Towards the ASEAN Community, From Vision to Action", Trung said the upcoming ASEAN Summit and related meetings will focus on ASEAN Community building, ASEAN external relations development, tackling global challenges and other regional and international issues.

"Leaders will take stock of all progress of ASEAN development and put forward the direction of cooperation for the next year," said Trung.

ASEAN leaders at the meeting are expected to pass three documents including a work plan on ASEAN integration, a declaration of ASEAN leaders on human resource development and skills for economic recovery and sustained development, and a declaration on the welfare promotion for women and children.

ASEAN and dialogue partners are expected to pass a series of documents including ASEAN-China declaration on sustainable development, ASEAN-Republic of Korea declaration on strategic partnership for peace and prosperity, and Hanoi Joint Declaration on 5th anniversary of EAS.
