Death toll from flood rises to 46 in Vietnam

10-21-2010 13:35 BJT

HANOI, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Vietnamese Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control said here Wednesday that flood has left 46 people dead, 21 missing and 18 others injured in the country's central region, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

Of the total deaths, 16 people were in Nghe An, 21 in Ha Tinh, 8 in Quang Binh and one in Thanh Hoa province, said the report.

Meanwhile, the flood continued to submerge various parts of Vietnam's North-South railway system in central provinces, causing delay to the country's railway transportation.

The national highway 1A, a key road running from north to south in the country, was one-meter deep in water in some parts and many provincial roads in central Vietnam remained even deeper under water.

The rain also flooded thousands of houses in these provinces for the second time since the beginning of this month, said the report.

The committee asked local authorities to closely monitor the water levels of rivers in these provinces, according to the report.

The previous floods in early October killed 66 people in central Vietnam.

Vietnamese government has decided to dispatch 2,000 tons of rice and ten million dollars to the worst-hit Quang Binh and Ha Tinh provinces.

The central government also sent out an urgent message requiring all relevant agencies and organizations to evacuate and support inhabitants in dangerous places, rescue victims and protect dikes.
