Kyrgyzstan election will not be rerun despite recount: official

10-21-2010 13:37 BJT

BISHKEK, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Kyrgyz Central Election Commission (CEC) would announce the official results of the parliamentary election only after it finished a ballot recount but there would be no new elections, authorities said here Wednesday.

"We (CEC) will open strongboxes (more than 2,000) and conduct a final check," chairman of the commission Akylbek Sariyex said, adding that the commission would announce the official results only after the recount was finalized.

On the same day, Kyrgyz presidential chief of staff Emilbek Kaptagayex told local media the country would not cancel the results of the parliamentary elections or hold new elections.

"(The authorities) have no such plans. In my opinion, political parties have accepted the election results," Interfex quoted his words as saying.

"The authorities are satisfied with the results of the elections, which were honest and transparent, just what we wanted," he said.

Kyrgyzstan held a popular vote on Oct. 10, to elect the country's first parliamentary democracy. Five parties passed the thresholds to form the Central Asian country's new parliament.

However, on Oct. 13, the CEC agreed to consider a recount of the parliamentary election after claims that one party might have unfairly missed representation.

The move was possible only after all six parties -- Ata-Jurt, Ar-Namys, Republic, the Social Democratic of Kyrgyzstan, Ata-Meken and Butun Kyrgyzstan -- presented identical documents containing the results, according to CEC.
