Haze from Indonesia disturbs neighboring countries

JAKARTA, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Haze from Sumatra island of Indonesia has decreased feasibility and disturbed Malaysia and Singapore, officials said.

Despite the number of hot spots has decreased after rains, the feasibility still lower to between 3 to 4 kilometers in Riau province of the island, far below the normal level of over 10 kilometers, head of Weather Monitoring Unit of the provincial Meteorology and Geophysics Agency named only Marzuki told Xinhua by phone from the province on Thursday.

"This is actually not a favorable condition for flight, at the normal condition the feasibility is at about 10 kilometers," Tarman Sembiring, weather observer at Riau province main airport Sutan Syarif Hidayatullah told Xinhua by phone from the province Thursday.

One small airport in Dumai district at the province was closed on Wednesday due to the haze, he said.

In Malaysia, Education Department of Johore, a southern state in Peninsula Malaysia, ordered on Wednesday schools in the districts of Muar and Ledang in the state to temporarily shut down due to the thick haze from Indonesia blanketing the areas. At least 200 schools and thousands of students are affected.

Antara news wire reported that the haze has also reached Singapore.

The number of hot spots in Sumatra island reached 202 on Oct. 19, then it lowered to 61 on Oct.20, but in Riau province of the island it rose from 35 to 37, Marzuki said.

"Rains have disappears some of the hot spots," he said.

Haze resulted from land clearing has frequently enveloped Sumatra, Borneo islands of Indonesia up to neighboring ASEAN countries, which causes billion-of-dollars financial loss.
