DAVAO CITY, Philippines, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Four policemen and a village worker were hurt when leftist rebels ambushed them in southern Philippines on Wednesday, the military said on Thursday.

The wounded included a town police chief with the rank of major after some 50 New People's Army rebels opened fire at a village in Prosperidad town in Mindanao's Agusan del Sur province, Noli Kanashiro, spokesperson of the army's 4th Infantry Division, said.

"The policemen were on their way back to their station in Prosperidad town proper at around 4 p.m. after providing security during a forum in a nearby village when they were ambushed," Kanashiro said.

Kanashiro said the victims were onboard a police mobile car together with a village treasurer who just hitched a ride when they were waylaid. He said the victims are now undergoing treatment at a local hospital while soldiers and policemen are now conducting pursuit operations against the suspects.
