MOSCOW, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Moscow City Duma Thursday approved the appointment of Sergei Sobyanin as the new mayor of the city after an extraordinary session.

As a 52-year-old native of Tyumen region in northwest Siberia, Sobyanin has served as deputy prime minister until today's appointment since May 2008.

Sobyanin was born in 1958 in the ethnic Mansi village of Nyaksimovl. He worked at the Chelyabinsk pipe factory before starting his political career.

Since 1984, Sobyanin has served in various government posts at different levels. He once served as a city mayor in 1991-1993 of Kogalym in northern Tyumen region.

Sobyanin entered the federal government in 1996, when he was elected a member of the Federation Council, or the upper house of the Russian parliament. Later he worked as a presidential envoy in Ural federal district and as Tyumen governor since 2001.

In 2004, the then-governor joined the ruling United Russia party and became a member of the party's supreme council.

In 2005, Sobyanin was promoted to be the chief of Kremlin administration. In that capacity, he headed Medvedev's election staff in early 2008. In the same year, Sobyanin was again promoted to the post of a deputy prime minister.

On Sep. 28, 2010, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev dismissed then Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, 74, after he held the mayorship for 18 years, citing loss of confidence.

On Oct. 9, 2010, Sobyanin was nominated by the ruling United Russia party for Moscow mayor along with three other candidates.

Last Friday, Sobyanin was picked up for the mayor's candidate by Medvedev.
