Fighter jets escort UAE flight to JFK airport in New York amid terror alerts

10-30-2010 08:53 BJT

NEW YORK, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- A passenger plane originating from United Arab Emirates was escorted by fighter jets and landed safe at JFK airport in New York on Friday, officials said.

The U.S. officials said there is no known threat associated with the plane, but it was escorted to John F. Kennedy International Airport as a precautionary move.

FBI spokesman Richard Kolko said the plane -- Emirates Airlines Flight 201 which took off from Dubai -- was met at JFK by FBI and Port Authority police. He said the action was being taken solely because the plane was carrying cargo from Yemen.

John Cornelio, a spokesman for U.S. North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), said that the airliner was escorted by Canadian CF-18 fighters to the U.S. border, where two U.S. F-15 fighters took over.

NORAD is the bi-national U.S.-Canadian military organization responsible for the aerospace and maritime defense of the United States and Canada.

Emirates Airline has issued a statement after landing, saying it is cooperating fully with the U.S. authorities.

President Obama confirmed Friday that federal authorities had uncovered a "credible terrorist threat" in suspicious packages believed to be linked to Yemen's al-Qaida branch.

Obama, in a brief address to reporters at the White House, said that an examination of the initial two suspicious packages, bound from Yemen to the U.S., determined that they apparently contained explosive materials. They likely were bound for places of Jewish worship in Chicago, he said.

Suspicion fell on al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, based in Yemen, which took responsibility for a failed plot to blow up a U. S. passenger jet on Christmas Day in 2009.
