Australia's Qantas reschedules to account for A380 absence

11-11-2010 14:12 BJT

SYDNEY, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Australia's Qantas Airways updated its international flight schedule on Thursday to account for the absence of its six Airbus A380 aircraft.

The airline, which grounded all its A380 superjumbos a week ago, said the changes would minimize disruptions for passengers.

"The new forward schedule enables Qantas to accommodate customers on services across its entire international network over the coming weeks, regardless of when A380 aircraft re-enter service," it said in a statement.

"While Qantas is committed to bringing its A380s back into service as soon as possible, this contingency schedule has been designed to provide certainty for customers planning to travel in the near future," it added.

The A380s have been grounded after an engine exploded on a Qantas A380 flying from Singapore to Sydney shortly after take-off, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing in Singapore on November 4.

Since then, engineers from engine maker Rolls-Royce and aircraft maker Airbus have been called in to inspect all the A380 Trent 900 engines.

Problems with oil leaks have been found in one engine on each of three different aircraft and those engines are expected to be replaced.

"Qantas' A380 aircraft will not return to service until there is complete certainty that the fleet can operate safely," it said.

Meanwhile, Qantas will use its entire fleet of more than 250 aircraft across the domestic and international operations to minimize disruptions.
