CANBERRA, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Executive Manager at The Australian Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Study Center on Thursday said continuation of World Trade Organization (WTO) Doha round is likely to be one of the focuses of APEC summit in Japan.

The 18th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting will be held in Yokohama, Japan from Nov. 13-14.

Executive Manager at The Australian APEC Study Center at RMIT University in Melbourne, Margot Kilgour, shared with Xinhua over her views on the likely outcomes of the APEC summit and what is important to Australia.

She said APEC has an advantage that by bringing together the Finance Minister and various leaders, it is able to have an Asian focused thinking in an unique way compared to other international systems.

The continue discussions at the WTO Doha round, as well as doing their best to work on some of the financial imbalances that the world is currently experiencing, are the major challenges and activities for APEC institution.

"I guess from the Australian focus would be looking at trying to continue the WTO Doha round process," Kilgour told Xinhua reporter in an exclusive interview on Thursday.

"Other things that are really important to focus on are the Small and Medium Enterprises so there is likely to be some initiatives focused around improving opportunities for Small and Medium Enterprises."

Kilgour said other important areas including overall financial stability and regulatory reform in the region, and methods to improve on economic growth will also be brought up during the APEC summit.

APEC, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, is a forum which facilitates economic cooperation among 21 nations and regions in the Asia-Pacific area.

With an economic magnitude accounting for around 50 percent of the world's GDP, and 40 percent of both the world's population and world trade, APEC is working on areas such as trade and investment liberalization, business facilitation, human security, and economic and technical cooperation, aiming to achieve sustainable growth and prosperity for the region.
