Iraqi parliament reconvenes after ending political deadlock

11-12-2010 10:02 BJT

BAGHDAD, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi Parliament resumed its sessions on Thursday after the political blocs reached a power- sharing deal after more than eight months since the country's parliamentary elections.

The parliament session started at about 6:45 p.m. (1545 GMT) by the elder speaker Fuad Masom who called on the members of parliament to stand for a minute in morning for the Kurdish lawmaker, Sami Shorsh, who died earlier in the day by a heart attack.

Masom then called for the lawmakers to cast their votes to elect the Sunni lawmaker Ossama al-Nujaifi, according to the internal regulations of the Iraqi parliament, although he is the only candidate for the speaker post.

The lawmakers also voted for Qusai Abdul-Wahab al-Suhail, a Shiite, as the first deputy for the speaker, and Aref Taifour, a Kurd, as the second deputy for the speaker.

The session, which originally was scheduled to start at 11:00 a. m. (0800 GMT), was delayed frequently until the evening over last- minute disputes within the Shiite National Alliance about the distribution of posts, including the first deputy of the speaker.

According to the Iraqi constitution, the parliament must elect its new speaker and his two deputies in the first session. Then the parliament under the new speaker must elect a new president who will later call on the candidate of the largest bloc for the prime minister post to form his cabinet.
