Russian starts open registration of domain name in Russian language

MOSCOW, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- The open registration of the first ever Russian language domain name . has kicked off on Thursday.

From now on every Russian can register the domain in Russian language for 500-600 rubles (about 17-20 U.S. dollars).

"Those who want to register several domains, may get a discount, " Andrei Kolesnikov, the head of the Coordination Center of Internet National Domain, was quoted by Itar-Tass news agency as saying.

The domain name ., which means Russian Federation, may become more popular than .ru, Kolesnikov predicted, adding that some 100,000 Russian domains could be registered by the end of this year.

Only 18 domain registrars in Russia will accept the applications. According to the rules, foreign companies and citizens can not get an account for the Russian domain in the first year since its open registration.

Russia has become one of the first countries to have the right for the creation of domain name using its national language.
