Venezuelan president wraps up visit to Cuba

HAVANA, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has concluded a four-day visit to Cuba after meeting former Cuban leader Fidel Castro and current leader Raul Castro.

"We strengthened the friendship and cooperation between the two governments and the two peoples with the visit," an official statement said Thursday.

Before leaving for his country on Wednesday evening, Chavez was accompanied by Raul Castro to Jose Marti International Airport in Havana.

Chavez arrived in the island country on Sunday to attend a ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of the signing of a comprehensive cooperation agreement between the two countries.

During the ceremony, Raul Castro stressed solidarity, technological sovereignty and economic integration in cooperation between the two countries.

Chavez said that the signing of the cooperation agreement is the foundation for Cuba-Venezuela cooperation in the future.

During his visit, Chavez held a 4-hour meeting with Fidel Castro during which both leaders stressed "fraternal" relations between the two countries.

Cuba and Venezuela are "an example of brotherly relations between two revolutionary peoples who fight for a better future for mankind," Cuba's official daily Granma said.

Venezuela is Cuba's main political and economic partner. Trade between the two nations reaches around 3.5 billion U.S. dollars every year.

Caracas sends around 100,000 barrels of oil per day to Havana, and Havana provides professional services, especially in health and education, to Venezuela.

In an interview on Cuban television Sunday night, Chavez said that Cuba and Venezuela have become "the cradle of a new world, thanks to their constant struggle to get free from the shackles of capitalism and to follow the paths of socialism."

"Havana and Caracas have created an unprecedented integration system, not only in the history of Latin America but also in the world as a whole," he said.
