Chinese lawmaker urges restraint on Korean Peninsula

11-24-2010 11:07 BJT Special Report:DPRK, S. Korea Exchange Fire |

CHICAGO, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Restraint and calmness are needed on the Korean Peninsula, because ease of tensions is in the interest for all, a visiting Chinese lawmaker said here Tuesday.

"China is very much concerned with the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula, as both the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) are China's close neighbors," said Zha Peixin, vice chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress.

The Korean Peninsula nuclear issue could only be solved through diplomatic means and peace and stability on the peninsula should be maintained, he told a forum hosted by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.

"People do recognize the six-party talks are really the best way to address this issue," said Zha. "There are still great hopes for the talks."

Only through direct contacts can confidence be established, which is important in solving the issue, he added.

"China has always been urging all parties concerned to work closely to address this issue, and will continue to do so," Zha said. "But we need patience, because it is such a complicated issue and won't be done overnight."

The Chinese lawmaker made the comments after the Republic of Korea and the DPRK exchanged fires on Tuesday in waters off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula, leaving at least two South Korean marines dead and 16 others injured.
