Cambodia's stampede death toll rises to 456

PHNOM PENH, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- The number of the dead from the stampede at Diamond Island bridge on Monday night rose to 456, according to the report from the sub-committee for urgent settlement on the Diamond Island bridge accident released on Wednesday afternoon.

The report recorded that 347 people died in the hospitals and 109 people were reported from local authorities that they were killed instantly at the accident and sent to their homeland without admission into the hospital.

The report was signed by the chairman of the sub-committee Ith Samheng, who is the minister of social affairs.

So by 13:00 PM on Wednesday, the number of the dead rose to 456, said the sub-committee report.

All the victims are from 17 cities and provinces in Cambodia.

Cambodia's Water Festival from Nov. 20 to 22 is the largest annual festival in the Southeast Asian nation, around two million Cambodians, especially those from rural areas converged to the city to enjoy the regatta.
