Chinese police shut down 2,500 illegal websites in 4 months

BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Ministry of Public Security said Wednesday that the nation's police had shut down over 2,500 illegal websites from July to the end of October.

The ministry launched a 6-month crack-down in July in a bid to stop the spread of illegal information in cyber space, especially targeting pornography, online gambling as well as trade in drugs, guns and explosives.

Also according to the statement, police authorities have, since July, handled 2,300 minor violation cases, and over 4,000 criminal cases based on the illegal information they intercepted online.

The ministry listed examples of cases handled in the crack-down campaign in the statement.

For instance, police authorities of the city of Shantou, Guangdong Province, busted an online gambling gang in August with its illegal operations involving a total of 250 million yuan (37 million U.S. dollars).
