Hello Kitty castle on way to city

BEIJING, Nov. 25 -- Famed for inducing long snaking queues wherever she appears, Hello Kitty is to have her own castle in Beijing, the first time the famous Japanese cat will engage her Chinese fans with role-playing games.

Running from Dec 1 through to March 11 on the north side of Beijing Workers Stadium's east gate, the event, named Hello Kitty Black Wonder, cost 20 million yuan to create and will look like a huge castle.

The castle was designed to celebrate the 30th birthday of the world-famous kitten and is decorated with labyrinth-like sets, which are being shipped from Hong Kong.

Eric Wang, one of the leaders of the project, who has participated in the exhibition since 2008, said it is targeted at adults rather than children.

"Hello Kitty is after all more than 30 years old and she does have several generations of fans," he said.

Wang told METRO that the exhibition is conceived around an adventure trip during which the bowtie-wearing Hello Kitty and her boyfriend, Dear Daniel, are kidnapped by the villain Kuromi, who uses magic to put the entire castle into gloomy darkness and commits evil deeds, because he is jealous of Kitty having lots of friends.

"Visitors will play the brave rescuers and experience the game in the real world, trying out different kinds of challenges to rescue the couple," he said.

Some of the challenges include riddle guessing, word seeking and looking for differences in pictures.

If patrons fail to rescue Kitty and Daniel, the game can be restarted.

The exhibition, which sold 70,000 tickets during its time in Hong Kong, is likely to attract 200,000 visitors.

The tickets, which can now be booked through online agencies, range from 120 yuan to 180 yuan per person.

A saleswoman with online agency told METRO the tickets may be sold out before the opening as "it has been selling like hot cakes recently".
