GM, Isuzu recalling 192,676 pickups over children restraint problem

11-25-2010 14:19 BJT

CHICAGO, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- More than 192,000 General Motors and Isuzu compact pickup trucks are being recalled due to a problem with child-seat anchor system which doesn't comply with federal safety standards, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall affects Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon models from the 2004 to 2011 model years, as well as Isuzu I-280 and I- 350 pickups from 2006 and I-290 and I-370 models from 2007 and 2008, which were also built by GM. The affected models could be regular cab or extended cab vehicles without a rear seat and equipped with a front 60/40 split Bench seat.

NHTSA said that the top tether anchor for the front center seat is not accessible and the owner manual does not include instructions regarding how to use it. Without the top tether anchor, the child restraint may not be properly secured.

"Both NHTSA and GM discourage placement of a child in a front seat, nevertheless, there are individual circumstances that may require placement of a child in a restraint in the front center seating position of this vehicle which does not offer a rear seat, " NHTSA said on its website.

Lack of access to the top tether anchor and lack of instruction regarding how to use it may lead to improper installation of child restraint, which may cause a reduction in the restraint performance in the event of a crash, increasing risk of injury or death to the child seated in the restraint, according to NHTSA.

No injuries, crashes or complaints have been reported, according to GM spokesman Alan Alder.

Dealers will cut a hole into the back panel trim cover to allow access to the top tether anchor. And customer will be provided with an owner's manual supplement that describes how to install a child restraint using a top tether in the center position.
