Mexico to send more soldiers to border area to fight drug violence

11-25-2010 14:32 BJT

MEXICO CITY, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Mexican government said Wednesday it would send more soldiers and police to areas bordering the United States to fight drug-related violence where drug violence between two drug gangs has escalated to warfare this year.

Mexico's federal police spokesman Alejandro Poire said the new decision called "Coordinated Northeast Operation" is aimed at redoubling the government's efforts to fight drug violence in Mexico's two northeast states of Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon.

He added that drug violence has escalated to warfare earlier this year by a split between the Gulf and Zetas drug gangs in parts of Tamaulipas state across the border from U.S. Texas and the industrial city of Monterrey in Nuevo Leon state.

With the help of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the Mexican police on Tuesday captured Carlos "the Cowboy" Montemayor, the alleged successor to drug lord Edgar "La Barbie" Valdez Villarreal, whose gang is believed to be behind the escalated drug violence.

The capture of Montemayor, 38, was "the result of information-sharing with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and following up leads after the capture of Edgar Valdez" who was arrested on Aug. 30, the police said in a statement on Wednesday.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon launched a campaign to crack down on drug trafficking and other crimes shortly after he was sworn in December 2006. So far nearly 30,000 people have died in violence linked to the drug trade.
