Brazilian president-elect presents new economic team

11-25-2010 15:09 BJT

RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's President-elect Dilma Rousseff announced the key members of her new economic team, which will continue the government's successful economic policy, a statement from her office said Wednesday.

Finance Minister Guido Mantega will remain in the same position, while Alexandre Tombini will be the next president of the Central Bank, and Miriam Belchior will be the new planning minister.

Mantega, a 61-year-old economist, was part of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's government since the beginning. He was Lula's planning minister from 2003 to 2004, and president of Brazil's Development Bank (BNDES) from 2004 to 2006.

Mantega became head of the finance ministry in March 2006, and is credited with helping to bring about the Brazilian economy's quick recovery from the international financial crisis.X The country's gross domestic product (GDP) registered a contraction of 0.2 percent in 2009 and is expected to register an expansion of over 7.5 percent this year.

At a press conference in Brasilia, the finance minister said he will aim to reduce the government's expenses and public debt in the new administration. He said the goal is to reach a public debt of 30 percent of GDP by 2014. Brazil's public debt is now at 41 percent.

"I want to reaffirm my commitment to consolidate the economic development, with high growth rates and a continuous improvement of the Brazilian population's living conditions," he said.
