Results of Tongan nobles' election revealed

11-25-2010 15:47 BJT

WELLINGTON, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Results in Tonga's historic election for a more democratic parliament are due on Thursday evening but the nine nobles chosen by the nobility have been revealed.

They are the Honorables Fielakepa, Fusitu'a, Fakafonua, Ma'afu, Tu'i Vakano, Tu'i Ha'ateiho, Lasike, Vaea and Tu'i Lakepa, Radio New Zealand international reported on Thursday.

They said they wanted the country's new prime minister to come from the people's representatives.

The nobles revealed it was the King's wish that a commoner became the next prime minister and they had to make that happen.

The nine nobles seats were selected by the 33 noble families and the four recently appointed Law Lords were allowed to vote in that poll.

Voting in Tonga's election is now drawing to a close with official results from the 17 people's representatives' seats expected by Thursday evening.
