NOUAKCHOTT, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- The new U.S ambassador to Nouakchott, Jo Ellen Powell, says security remains one of the main areas of cooperation between her country and Mauritania.

"Security, promotion of values of tolerance and peace, socio- economic development, health and food security are some of the areas that we shall continue to work together," the diplomat told the media after handing over her letters of credence to Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz on Wednesday.

"I will continue to strengthen the cooperation between our two countries and to support the government in its quest to give Mauritanians a better future," Powell added.

On July 6, former U. S. ambassador to Nouakchott Mark Boulwar hailed the role played by Mauritania in the anti-terrorism war within the region.

"Mauritania remains a regional leader in the fight against violent extremism," the envoy said before departure.
