Let's talk Turkey

11-25-2010 16:53 BJT

Americans rejoice! The time of the great gluttony is at hand! Thanksgiving has come again, and Americans across the city today will be looking for ways to get stuffed on stuffing, gorged on gravy and plumped on pumpkin pie. And although many of us will have thoughts of home-cooked feasts requiring hours of preparation, few of us will be able to find the time in our Shanghai-paced lives to take on the turkey. Luckily, restaurants and hotels across the city have taken up the challenge and prepared multi-course dinners and big buffets to bring the festival to Shanghai. The Global Times loosened its belt and sought out some of the best places in town to dig in.

Some reservations

The astute reader whose judgment has not (yet) been burdened with the weight of a pound of tryptophan-tainted carbohydrates will realize that reservations for any of today's feasts are good idea. More than that, they are essential. Many of these dinners listed below may already be full by the time you read this. Be sure to call ahead, or your pound-packing pilgrimage might be in vain.

Traditional turkeys

Those looking for a Thanksgiving, American style with no fusion or fireworks have a lot to choose from. The following are a list of venues we found that don't try to be anything but a turkey feast.

The newly seven years old Mesa/Manifesto will hold its popular traditional Thanksgiving dinner - turkey, stuffing and all the trimmings. For 288 yuan ($43.30) per person, you can snag a table from 6 pm to 11 pm in one of Shanghai's long running New York-style bars/bistros.

Add: 748 Julu Road, near Fumin Road

Tel: 6289-9108

Beer lovers who want a bottomless glass of grog to help stuff their stomachs should be sure to check out the Boxing Cat Brewery's Thanksgiving feast. In addition to all-you-can-drink on the brewery's signature beers, you'll also be able to munch on a wide variety of comfort food.

Stuffing lovers will like the choice between sage and sausage stuffing with chest-nuts, wild mushrooms and apples and jalapeño cornbread stuffing. They'll be running the deal at both of their downtown locations on Fuxing Road with two separate seatings, 6 pm and 8:30 pm respectively.

Add: Sinan Mansions, 519 Fuxing Road, near Chongqing Road South

Tel: 6431-2091

Add: 82 Fuxing Road, near Yongfu Road

Tel: 6426-0360

The ultra-chic Roosevelt Prime Steakhouse will be serving up a five-course meal (398 yuan per person) of traditional favorites to exhaust you with consumption.

Although there's a certain gentility to the menu in line with the swanky wood panel-ing and crystal chandelier vibe of the venue - courses like pumpkin soup with wild mushroom cappuccino foam for one - there's still a homegrown feel to the offerings. Dry rubbed baby back ribs are coupled with Coca Cola glazed Memphis beans. And with second helpings available, you'll really be able to get stuffed.

Add: 160 Taiyuan Road, near Yongjia Road

Tel: 6433-8240

If you're one of those Americans who's gone deep-fried with their turkey and just can't go back, Lan is providing its patrons with deep-fried Butterball turkeys for the grease-feasting faithful. For 228 yuan, you get to take a bite out of the straight-ahead spread of Thanksgiving goodies including roasted garlic mashed potatoes, candied yams, green bean casserole and chorizo cornbread stuffing.

Add: 102 Guangdong Road, near Sichuan Road Middle

Tel: 6323-8029
