KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan police captured five Taliban militants including their commander during an operation against Taliban fighters in Chardara district of the northern Kunduz province on Wednesday, provincial police chief Abdul Rahman Syedkhili said.

"During the operation which covered several villages today, our police arrested a Taliban commander Mawlawi Wajid along with his four armed men," Syedkhili told newsmen at a press conference here.

With the capture of Mawlawi Wajid, the security situation would be further improved in Chardara district, he said.

Taliban militants fighting Afghan and NATO-led troops have yet to make comment.

This is the second setback Taliban militants suffered in Chardara district in a single day on Wednesday.

Early in the day the governor of Chardara district Abdul Wahid Omarkhil said that four Taliban militants were killed during a separate operation.

Chardara has been regarded as the stronghold of Taliban militants in Kunduz and the neighboring Baghlan province in the relatively peaceful northern region of Afghanistan.
