Leftist rebels execute policeman in S. Philippines: military

12-02-2010 09:17 BJT

DAVAO CITY, Philippines, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- The leftist New People's Army (NPA) rebels have executed a policeman implicated in the murder of a peasant leader in southern Philippines, the military confirmed Wednesday.

Senior Police Officer Ronnie Cabunas was shot dead by two NPA assassins on a motorcycle at the town center in Boston, in Mindanao region's Davao Oriental province.

Lieutenant Colonel Medel Aguilar, spokesperson of the army's 10th Infantry Division, condemned Cabunas' killing, accusing the rebels of gross human rights violation.

The rebels, in turn, through their local mouthpiece Roel Agustin II, accused the victim as behind the assassination of farmers' leader Ludenio Monzon also in Boston town April last year and as well as other "grave abuses against the peasants."

"He (Cabunas) had no compassion for hapless civilians and no respect at all for even the most basic of human rights," Agustin said in statement.

The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging a guerrilla campaign in the countryside for four decades. The Philippines military estimates the NPA strength at more than 4,000 guerrilla fighters scattered in at least 60 provinces throughout the Southeast Asian country.

Peace talks between the Philippine government and the leftists bogged down after the United States included the NPA and its parent body as foreign terrorist organizations in 2002.
