Eurostar announces delay, cancellation due to bad weather

12-02-2010 09:52 BJT

PARIS, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- The European high-speed rail service supplier Eurostar announced delays and cancellations on Wednesday and predicted worse traffic on Thursday due to the blizzard that has swept Europe.

Due to current bad weather, "speed restrictions are in place on the high speed lines in both the UK and Northern France on Wednesday 1 December," the company said in a statement on its web site.

"As a result Eurostar services are subject to delays of up to 90 minutes," it added, telling passengers that timetable for Thursday is revised and necessary cancellations are made to "all remaining scheduled services."

"A reduced number of services will run from all destinations," said the company. According to French media, nearly 50 percent of rail services linking Paris and London, Brussels and London will be reduced over Thursday.

The London-based group has all its trains traverse the Channel Tunnel between Britain and France, and has one main terminus in Paris as well as several important calling stations in other French regions.

During the December 2009 European snowfall, over 2,000 passengers were stuck on board failed trains inside the Channel tunnel while all Eurostar services were cancelled for three days.
