Algeria says Sahel nations able to tackle terror threats

12-02-2010 14:00 BJT

ALGIERS, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Countries in the African Sahel are fully capable of appropriately addressing terror threats themselves, a senior Algerian official said.

In an interview aired by state-run radio on Wednesday, presidential advisor Kamel Rezzag Bara said Algeria firmly opposes any foreign interference in the region's internal affairs because "it is possible such interference will become another threat."

The official said the United States, Britain and the African Union, are aware of the correctness of Algeria's position. "The terms should be made by ourselves rather than countries outside of our region."

Sahel, an African region between the Sahara desert in the north and the Sudanian Savanna in the south, is home to the al-Qaida in Islamic Maghreb(AQLM), an al-Qaida affiliate.

In recent years, the group had kidnapped citizens of Western countries and carried out attacks in Algeria, Mali and Mauritania, which prompted worries in the West that the region could become a springboard for the group to launch global attacks.

Bara also said it is unacceptable to associate terrorism with Islam and Arab, adding that the fight against terror should be carried out within the framework of respect for religious values and civilization.

The official reiterated Algeria's opposition to ransoms paid to terrorists in exchange for the hostages they held, because ransoms have become a major financial source for terrorist groups.
