UN chief calls for full probe into bloody clash in West Darfur

12-02-2010 14:04 BJT

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday called for a full probe into a clash in Sudan's West Darfur, which involved protestors and government security forces, leaving at least one killed and several wounded.

The clash took place earlier Wednesday at a university during a visit to Zalingei, West Darfur, by the Joint Chief Mediator Djibril Bassole and Qatar's State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud, said a statement issued here late on Wednesday by Ban's spokesman.

"The secretary-general deeply regrets the loss of life and calls for a full investigation to ascertain the facts pertaining to the incident," the statement said.

"The secretary-general calls on the government and all armed movements to fully engage in the Doha negotiations and to demonstrate their willingness to make real compromises in order to address the concerns of the Darfur population who have waited too long for peace," the statement added.

The Doha talks were the first contacts since 2007 between the Sudanese government and the major armed rebel group, the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), which boycotted another largely abortive Darfur peace deal in 2006.

Thanks to the UN-backed mediation, representatives of the Sudanese government and the JEM signed a framework agreement in February 2009 as a kind of roadmap towards peace. The new peace round has been internationally hailed as a major breakthrough in the efforts to bring peace to Darfur.
