SANTIAGO, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Chilean dignitaries hailed the fruitful cooperation between the two countries in the past four decades at a seminar here Wednesday.

"These 40 years have been very productive and of mutual cooperation," Chilean Mining Minister Laurence Golborne said when inaugurating the event called "Chile-China 40 years: What will the future bring."

The seminar, organized by the Center for Latin American Studies on China (CELC), was held as Chile and China are celebrating the 40th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.

Golborne hailed China‘s high demand for Chilean copper, which totaled 1.7 million tons since 2000, and said that the current challenge is to increase mutual investments.

Chinese Ambassador to Chile Lv Fan said the seminar would help deepen mutual trust and benefit the two countries. He also praised the CELC‘s role in promoting ties between China and Latin America.

China‘s policy towards Latin America is based on mutual trust, common development, exchanges in the humanitarian sector and strategic cooperation, Lv said.

Former Chilean President Ricardo Lagos told the event that China would play an important role in the next 40 years, and that the CELC would become a lab to study a variety of topics related to China such as climate change and the building of a new international financial structure.

Lagos hailed China‘s achievement in poverty reduction, and said that China‘s growth would have a positive impact on the region.

Zhou Zhongshu, president of China Minmetals Company, called Chile an important trading partner in the Latin American region.

Zhou said that to continue expanding bilateral ties, both sides should further try to understand each other through academic forums and official exchanges, promote economic cooperation in direct and technology investments and set up joint companies.

Chile is China‘s second largest trading partner in Latin America, and China is Chile‘s largest trading partner. Bilateral trade last year rose 2.1 percent to 17.72 billion U.S. dollars.

China and Chile forged a comprehensive cooperative partnership in 2004.
