UN chief calls for prompt release of presidential poll result in Cote d'Ivoire

12-02-2010 14:58 BJT

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday called for the prompt announcement of the provisional result of the run-off presidential election in Cote d'Ivoire, saying that the timely release "is the key element of the integrity and validity of the electoral process."

The secretary-general made the appeal in a statement issued by his spokesman here, the second one in a single day on the presidential run-off in Cote d'Ivoire.

"The secretary-general regrets that the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has not yet announced the provisional results of the run-off presidential election that was held on Nov. 28 in Cote d'Ivoire," said the second statement issued late on Wednesday by Ban's spokesman.

"The secretary-general recalls that the announcement of the run-off provisional national results by the Commission is a key element of the integrity and validity of the electoral process, and thereby is an important element in the process of the certification of the final results by his special representative in Cote d'Ivoire," the statement said.

"The secretary-general stresses the need for the Independent Electoral Commission to complete its work and announce the provisional results without further delay," the statement said. "If required, more time should be given to the Independent Electoral Commission for this purpose."

Incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo and former prime minister, Alassane Ouattara, are the two candidates in the run-off held on Sunday after garnering the highest number of votes in the first round of the election on Oct. 31.
