Building foundations in mudslide-devastated NW China county to be reinforced by year end

12-02-2010 21:54 BJT

LANZHOU, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- China plans to reinforce the foundations of buildings in mudslide-devastated Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province by the end of 2010, to ensure displaced residents can return home for the New Year.

Nearly one third of the county was submerged after the massive landslide blocked the Bailong River and created a barrier lake on August 8.

Experts think the foundations of apartment buildings were damaged during the weeks they were underwater.

A team of experts completed a survey on the loosened foundations at the end of November. They have made recommendations on a reinforcement project, said officials with the provincial housing and urban-rural development bureau.

Work crews pledged to finish the reinforcement work within a month.

The mudslide left more than 1,750 people either dead or missing. About 47,000 were affected by the mudslide and the flooding.
