Exxon Mobil sued over illegal emissions at Texas refinery

HOUSTON, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Two environmental groups in the U. S. state of Texas on Tuesday filed a federal lawsuit against Exxon Mobil, demanding the oil giant reduce illegal emissions at its Texas refinery and chemical plant.

Exxon Mobil, the largest oil refinery in the United States, produced more than 8 million pounds of toxic pollutants over the past five years at it refinery and chemical plant in Baytown, Texas, committing over 2,500 violations of the U.S. Clean Air Act, according to the suit filed by the Sierra Club and Environment Texas.

"As long as major polluters continue to foul our air, and as long as state regulators fail to take effective action, we have a duty to our members and to the public to try to enforce the clean air laws ourselves," said Luke Metzger, director of Environment Texas.

The lawsuit is the latest by the Sierra Club and Environment Texas in their attempts to fight what they called illegal emissions by refineries and chemical plants that operate along the Texas Gulf Coast. If successful, the lawsuit could cost Exxon more than 80 million dollars in fines, the Sierra Club said.

The two environmental groups also have sued Shell Oil Co. and Chevron Phillps Chemical Co. over illegal emissions. The lawsuits resulted in settlements with the companies promising to spend millions of dollars for anti-pollution equipment and other clean air projects.

Exxon Mobil denied the allegations and said it would oppose the lawsuit.
