UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- The members of the UN Security Council on Tuesday said they are "deeply saddened" by the passing of Richard Holbrooke, the senior U.S. diplomat and former U.S. ambassador to the UN who died on Monday.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice, who holds the rotating Security Council presidency for December, delivered the statement to reporters here on behalf of the 15-member body.

Holbrooke died on Monday at the age of 69 after suffering a torn aorta over the weekend.

"Holbrooke's service spanned decades and continents, confronting profoundly difficult issues in global affairs," said Rice.

The Council members expressed their admiration for his contributions as U.S. ambassador to the UN from 1999 to 2001, and lauded his "energetic and unrelenting commitment to promoting peace and strengthening international cooperation at the United Nations."

At the time of his death, Holbrooke served as the U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan. The veteran U.S. diplomat is best known for playing an integral role in the creation of the Dayton Accords, which brought an end to the Bosnian War in 1995.
